Please tell us about the projects you worked on before making ‘Sun Also Rises’. How did you start, and how did you learn to make films?
Prior to making this short film, I had already shot an experimental short film in London, as well as several commercials.
Before I started shooting films, I thought that in today's era, there are many social and cultural issues that need to be shown and discussed by films, which can make more people pay attention to these issues and human problems, but I found that nowadays films rarely pay attention to these issues, so I began to write scripts and shoot them. I have made four short films so far, and several others are still in post-production
Tell us about ‘Sun Also Rises’. How do you describe it?
This is a story about the lives and fates of ordinary people affected and harmed by war in the context of war.
The story of the film was inspired by some of the news I had seen about people displaced by war, and it struck me deeply that if war broke out, we ordinary people would lose our loved ones, our food and our homes. So I came up with a story about two people who live in a safe area, but whose personal fates are tied to their hometown. No matter how far away you are from war, as long as it exists, it is the most painful experience for humanity. I just hope that through such a brutal story, I can convey the impact and hurt of war on each of us.
Please tell us about your favorite filmmakers.
Quentin Tarantino is my favorite director. I love the characters he writes. They are very interesting and unique.
If you were given a good budget, what would be your ideal project?
Given an adequate budget, I would like to make a feature film. When choosing the topic of the story, I prefer films of Asian culture, which will focus more on the discussion of Asian culture
Describe how you would ensure that production is on schedule. What steps would you take?
Before shooting a movie, I would make a detailed shooting plan and plan, including schedule, storyboard, scene design, etc. I will set a date that must be completed, and all of us will finish each other's plans within the date, and ultimately I will determine how to carry out all the plans, whether we can finish them, and if not, what is our alternative plan. In the process of shooting, we will strictly follow the time of each take, and will arrange the sequence from the most important shots to the unnecessary shots, if there is no more time in the shooting scene, we will delete those unnecessary shots.
What was the hardest part of making ‘Sun Also Rises’.
As for difficulties, I don't think I have any difficulties in shooting, because we will strictly follow our plan. Perhaps the only difficulty was that we had a budget of only £1,000 and we didn't realise some of our ideas on set construction and lighting equipment
If possible, tell us about your next work. What plans do you have for your future work?
Right now I'm working on a feature film with my screenwriter that revolves around an East Asian husband and a European wife living in London. This story explores the influence of different cultural backgrounds on married life. I hope I can find a fund smoothly
