Sand & Stone: An Interview with Berta Canivell

Please tell us about the projects you worked on before making ‘Sand & Stone’. How did you start, and how did you learn to make films?

I have written and directed four short films, including Sand & Stone. Additionally, I have spent 15 years independently creating music videos and a wide range of audiovisual projects. I have also produced a documentary and short films for other artists.

Although I studied in film schools, I believe my greatest learning has come from practical experience: shooting my own projects and collaborating on those of other directors. Working with different DOPs, directors, and departments has given me a richer and more diverse perspective. I believe it’s important for a director to have a general understanding of the different roles in a production. It helps to better appreciate the creative and technical possibilities and to collaborate more effectively with the team.

Tell us about ‘Sand & Stone’. How do you describe it?

Well, it began as an apology to someone I hurt, and I cared so much. I was heartbroken and my therapy was using my feelings, my thoughts and my learning to make a movie. So, to me it is a gift for everyone who is having a harsh time over a heartbreak and really wants to heal and move on in a positive way.

Please tell us about your favorite filmmakers.

I have had many “in love” moments in the movies such as with Steven Spielberg when I was a kid, Xavier Dolan, Sophia Coppola, Mizoguchi, Ozu, Rohmer, Lubitsch, Wong Kar Wai... But I guess now I am so into David Lynch. He inspires me not only with his movies but also with his menthality and way of living. His movies are like fairytales and that’s exactly what I am looking for right now in my upcoming projects. But I guess all of them made me dream high somehow, and that’s what I like about them.

If you were given a good budget, what would be your ideal project?

Actually I love sci-fi genre but there’s not many movies that got me like: oh this is what I was looking for in sci-fi. So, probably I’d do a sci-fi movie, not with many effects, the necessary ones but really well done.

Describe how you would ensure that production is on schedule. What steps would you take?

The first step I would ensure is a really good script. So I would put a lot of effort into the writing and then also into pre-production, to make sure that everything is ready for the shooting and then you don’t need to run and pay in the postpo.

What was the hardest part of making ‘Sand & Stone’.

Finishing it. It’s been four years of hard work and also an emotional trip.

If possible, tell us about your next work. What plans do you have for your future work?

I am now focusing on the writing of my next short film, witch I want to transform into my Opera Prima. My intentions are to find a producer to accompany me and my story.
