POSTCARD: An Interview with Oleksii Kirin

Tell us about yourself. How did you become an artist?

Until 2014, I was more involved in graphic design. But after the start of the war with Russia, he switched to directing. I worked a little on advertising and realized that I wanted something more. So I started filming.

What was your first job in the art field?

I shot a lot of little videos on my phone. Seconds to 30. Small stories. 2010+

What makes you want to tell stories? In other words, what are the themes/issues you want to incorporate into your work?

What interests me and confuses me. The following works are about this.

Please tell us about your vision and your method of approaching a new project?

Now it is at the level of studying the necessary historical and scientific literature on these issues that will be there.

Who are your filmmaking influencers? What are the films that were influential for you?

Dovzhenko, Paradzhanov, Spielberg, Darabont, Tarantino, Scorsese, Terrence Malick, Coen Brothers.

How do you think the industry is changing? How has COVID affected independent filmmaking/creation?

I think people will find a way out. Good for streaming services, but the decline of interesting cinema for the big screen. In Ukraine, there is also a war with russia. The production of films has practically stopped, except for documentaries.

What advice would you give to aspiring artists? What are some of the things they must follow/avoid? Do not be afraid of any decisions, experiment and respect those with whom you work. Learn to edit your own film

Do you think films/stories can bring about a change in the world? Because cinema gives us the feeling of a journey, of understanding many things. Like art in general)

What do you think people like to watch these days? Has the pandemic changed people's taste?

I think not very much. Perhaps the return of some genres, but it is always in a circle.

Please tell us about your upcoming projects. A short film about a young couple. This is science fiction.

But little by little I am preparing a full-length. It's a drama. I can't add anything else yet!
