PEPE - Directed by Daniel Belton

Project Type: (Experimental Film)

Project Title: PEPE (Moth Dances)

Brief Synopsis: Renowned artists collaborate for this project to create a cultural time capsule, focussing on the musicianship and beauty of Taonga Pūoro in dialogue with contemporary dance, craft and digital arts. Southerm Māori wāhine (Women) musician composers Mahina-Ina Kingi-Kaui with Te Tumu Toi Arts Laureate Ariana Tikao and Dr Ruby Solly are supported by Alistair Fraser and New Zealand Arts Icon, Dame Gillian Karawe Whitehead. The celebrated dance artistry of Nancy Wijohn, supported by Kelly Nash, resonates with traditional Māori musical instruments through gesture, song, breath and pulse. Our design concept respectfully draws on Mātauranga Māori (cultural knowledge) shared by this unique team of artists. Hineraukatauri, atua (Goddess) of traditional musical instruments, is the kaitiaki (Guardian) of all flutes or kōauau from the Taonga Pūoro family. The motif of the Pepe (Case Moth), is evoked as Taonga Pūoro combines with complementary practices in dance, craft and digital media. Whakatauki Mā te whiritahi, ka whakatutuki ai ngā pūmanawa ā tāngata.
