SYNOPSIS

FORTY is a psychological domestic drama that unfolds over the course of a single birthday while gradually revealing the hidden reality of a troubled marriage. On the morning of his 40th birthday, Daniel, a broad-shouldered plumber and father of two daughters, stands at the bathroom mirror trimming his beard. When his wife Emma appears behind him and comments that it looks scruffy, he quietly trims it shorter to satisfy her. It’s a small moment, but it hints at a pattern that has shaped their relationship for years. As the day progresses, Daniel moves through ordinary family routines — driving the children to school, preparing for the evening’s celebration, and running errands — while subtle tension between him and Emma becomes noticeable. That evening, friends gather at their home for a birthday party Emma has organised. To everyone around them, Emma appears sociable, confident and energetic, while Daniel remains quieter and more reserved. Throughout the evening, small moments trigger memories for Daniel. These flashbacks gradually reveal the deeper dynamics of the relationship. Emma frequently criticises Daniel’s choices, questions his tone during disagreements, and dismisses his attempts to help or make peace. Over time, Daniel has adapted by apologising or stepping back simply to avoid arguments. Other memories show Emma’s increasing drinking and her close relationship with a colleague named Mark. Daniel feels uncomfortable about the situation but struggles to raise concerns without being accused of jealousy or controlling behaviour.

As the night continues and guests begin to leave, the tension between Daniel and Emma finally surfaces. Emma accuses Daniel of flirting with a guest earlier in the evening. What begins as a familiar argument quickly escalates. Daniel attempts to calm the situation, repeating a phrase that seems to have defined his role in the relationship: “Let’s just keep the peace.” Instead, the peace collapses. Emma calls the police and claims she feels threatened by Daniel. Unknown to her, Daniel quietly activates the recording function on his phone during the argument. Moments later, Emma attacks him violently. Daniel does not fight back as the assault continues. The blows escalate until he collapses after striking his head on the floor. When the police force their way into the house, Emma insists she was acting in self-defence. However, an officer notices Daniel’s phone is still recording nearby, revealing what truly happened.

In the final moment of the story, Daniel once again stands at the bathroom mirror trimming his beard. This time, he stops exactly where he chooses, symbolising a small but meaningful reclaiming of control over his life.

FORTY presents a restrained but unsettling exploration of coercive control within a

relationship, challenging assumptions about power, abuse, and how easily manipulation can remain hidden behind the appearance of normal life.
