Demo-Lition: An Interview with Alesia Toyoko Glidewell

Please tell us about the projects you worked on before making ‘Demo-Lition’. How did you start, and how did you learn to make films?

I never went to film school, but I’ve made films since I was about 8 years old. After college, I worked as an A/V technician, where I was fortunate to be surrounded by colleagues who were filmmakers. Their experiences and aspirations motivated me to embark on my own filmmaking journey.  Before making ‘Demo-Lition,’ I had the opportunity to write and direct several 48 hour films, a mockumentary about a dance competition, and a few sci-fi/supernatural shorts.

Tell us about ‘Demo-Lition’. How do you describe it?

‘Demo-Lition’ shines a light on a pivotal moment in a couple’s lives, reflecting the sacrifices artists and their loved ones make as they persist in pursuing their dreams into adulthood.

Please tell us about your favorite filmmakers.

I love and admire the work of so many different filmmakers. From the sensibilities of Jean-Pierre Jeunet, Terry Gilliam and Darron Aronofsky to the iconic films of Spielberg, Christopher Nolan, James Cameron, Zemeckis, and Coppola. Milos Forman’s ‘Amadeus,’ Fellini’s ‘La Strada,’ and Mel Gibson’s ‘Braveheart’ are also among my favorite films.

If you were given a good budget, what would be your ideal project?

My ideal film would be an epic historical or science fiction drama with a profound exploration of the human condition. On the complete flip-side of that, I would love to make a wildly thrilling and intense action film or creature-feature.

Describe how you would ensure that production is on schedule. What steps would you take?

Aside from working with a stellar team above and below the line, I would do everything in my power to ‘make the movie in prep.’

What was the hardest part of making ‘Demo-Lition’.

I financed the film with a loan. It was still a very tight budget and a one-day shoot. I’m fortunate to have had such generous and talented collaborators, though I wish I could have compensated them fully for their worth.

If possible, tell us about your next work. What plans do you have for your future work?

Currently, I’m developing an action-comedy short with National Lampoon and Sony, which I’m very excited about, while also exploring other promising projects.
