Brief Synopsis: CLASSROOM 4 follows professor Reiko Hillyer as she teaches “The History of Crime and Punishment in the United States” inside the Columbia River Correctional Institution in Portland, Oregon. We witness as, over the course of a semester, “outside” students from Lewis & Clark College learn alongside “inside” students currently incarcerated at the prison, exploring concepts of mercy, justice, the evolution of the carceral state, and prison abolition. The film invites audiences into the prison classroom to experience how the shared education ultimately transforms everyone involved.
