Caged Animals: An Interview with Eddie Jelinet

Tell us about yourself. How did you become an artist?

I think art is something that is natural that is given to the artist when he is born. I have been an artist since I have a memory. I started painting when I was very young.

What was your first job in the art field?

i was commissioned to do a mural painting in a public school in mexico when i was 10 years old by the art institute

What makes you want to tell stories? In other words, what are the themes/issues you want to incorporate into your work?

I love cinema! i been in love with films since i was a little kid, i want to create stories that touch the heart and imagination of the people

Director Eddie Jelinet

Please tell us about your vision and your method of approaching a new project?

Art comes to your mind in a manifesto of the imagination, film is something that allows you to see in real life your dreams and more surrealistic ideas, i always approach to a new project because i have already imagined

Who are your filmmaking influencers? What are the films that were influential for you?

Big part of my filmmakers influences are Federico Fellini , Alejandro Jodorowsky, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Jean Cocteau and Pedro Almodovar

How do you think the industry is changing? How has COVID affected independent filmmaking/creation?

The industry is changing as technology and generations are evolving now everyone can do a film with their phone, i try to keep the art in the most pure form as building the costumes myself painting backgrounds just as much i can without the intervention of computer CGI i think the art in his pure form have the power to connect with people in a very powerful way, Covid did affected the filmmaking since we were working with very limited space and people but it didn’t affected the creativity , i filmed part of Caged Animals inside an apartment with just an actor and me behind the camera and holding a light at the same time.

What advice would you give to aspiring artists? What are some of the things they must follow/avoid?

something to follow is your dreams, never suppress your imagination, and of course do not let anyone tell you you can’t do it.

Do you think films/stories can bring about a change in the world?

Film has the power of telling stories that can change lives.

What do you think people like to watch these days? Has the pandemic changed people's taste?

The pandemic did change the way people act and see things. Maybe it didn’t change the taste but it did change the amount of time people invest in observing , some people for good some people for bad but it definitely changes us all the way we see life in general.
