Project Title: The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction
Project Type: Film
Brief Synopsis: In his 1936 essay, The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction, philosopher Walter Benjamin explores how the advent of technical means of reproduction, such as film and photography, changed our relationship with art. This short but profound work continues to attract the attention of many scholars, but also that of young videomakers like me, who are not immune to the fascination of such a prophetic work. This video essay aims to offer an impression of some of the exciting themes covered in this work, such as the complex relationship between the authenticity of artwork and new technologies, and the dynamic between mass aesthetic experience and photography. Above all, it seeks to showcase the fantasies that this masterpiece of contemporary philosophy has sparked in a young artist trying to navigate the digital and AI era.
